FREDD ATKINS; AN HISTORIC CAMPAIGN FOR SARASOTA’S FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN MAYOR

For Fredd Atkins, being a Sarasota County commissioner has been a life-long dream. Being elected the first Democratic commissioner of Sarasota County in 50 years and the first African American male to do so will be an historic achievement — for all the people of Sarasota.
Born in what he calls a “shot gun shack” in the old segregated Overtown section of Sarasota, he moved to Newtown in 1958 and has become an icon and leader of youth and the community for his entire life. He is proud to still be primary care giver of his beloved 101-year-old mother Glossie Atkins.
Fredd graduated from Sarasota High School and earned an AA from Manatee Junior College in Social Welfare and a BA in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences from the University of South Florida.
More than 30 years ago Fredd helped to lead the effort to bring single-member districts to the Sarasota City Commission. He’s been leading the fight to bring single-member districts to the county ever since, and the successful referendum of 2018 was a dream realized.

After nearly two decades serving on the Sarasota City Commission, Fredd became Sarasota’s mayor. Because of his leadership, fiscal discipline, and dedication to our citizens, he was re-elected twice.

Fredd has also worked as a social worker, substance abuse counselor, teacher and a small business owner. He has worked closely with parents and students in our public schools. That’s where he saw the best we have to offer, where the future of Sarasota looks brightest. “Our young people are ready; they just need the tools to make sure they’re successful,” says Fredd.
Fredd knows what our families are going through. His varied experience has also taught him how to solve the issues we face. That means bringing our cities and the county together — along with residents, small business owners, and community leaders — to help Sarasota grow while maintaining the beauty that makes us unique.
Fredd will bring that experience to the Sarasota County Commission to help our cities and the county work together. That means new partnerships to lower costs while maintaining or improving the services to our citizens. He’ll also work with local businesses to create new jobs that pay a living wage. He will work to bring “smart development” to our county, and he will fight to improve our water and air. He will work for ALL citizens of Sarasota County!
Fredd believes Sarasota County’s brightest days are ahead of us, especially since we passed single-member districts last year, which will break the shackles of one-party Republican rule we’ve had for 50 years in the county.
Fredd is running for Commissioner in District 1, which covers much of northern and eastern Sarasota County. It includes world-class educational institutions like the University of South Florida, New College of Florida, and Ringling College of Art and Design. It also includes world-class artistic venues such as the Ringling Museum and the Asolo Theater. It is home to natural beauty such as Myakka State Park and the Celery Fields. And, it is a regional commerce hub, including Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) and University Parkway, Fruitville Road, and US 301.
